ADRE grade is a state level exam conducted by the commission for direct recruitment of several grades of workers and employees in the state of Assam. The selection test for recruitment of Grade 3, HSSLC-level posts was coptised on September 15, 2024. More than 1100000 candidates took the exam which was conducted in a single session from 1030 AM to 1330 PM only. Due to the overwhelming response this particular examination was one of the biggest in the history of Assam. Based on a qualitative analysis of the surveys, three top features characterized the paper Self-awareness, Feedback, Vision and Reflections; Candidates considered the paper to be of moderate difficulty overall and particularly easy in sections of English and Mathematics.
Exam Structure and Scored Candidate feedback
The ADRE Grade 3 exam featured five sections: General Education / Social Studies, General Information / Knowledge, Analytical Ability / Reasoning, and Numerical / Mental Aptitude, English Proficiency, and Mathematics. All the sections made 150 questions in total, thus, the exam paper was 150 mark in total with each question being awarded one mark. The time given for the exam was of three hours, and this enabled the candidates to try all parts of the examination.
In the responses most of the candidates said that the sections of English and Mathematics were the easiest. The English section focused majorly on vocabulary and principles of grammar and comprehension while Mathematics section had questions concerning arithmetic, algebra and simplest forms of problems. The questions posed to the aspirants were mainly out of the areas covered in these subjects and for those who had prepared well these questions were easy to answer.
Three other parts, namely Social Studies, General Knowledge, and Logical Reasoning were viewed as moderately challenging by most of the participants. Social Studies –history, geography and current affairs were needed for the Social Studies section and the General Knowledge included sectional and international events. The Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability questions required thinking ability but those candidates who had solved similar questions in their preparation process did not found this part very difficult.
Measures for Smooth Conduct
Because of the scaling of the examination, the Assam state government put in place several measures to ensure the conduct of the examination is both smooth and fair. In this regard, to avoid any malpractice from the kperogi supporters, mobile internet services were halted in the state for 3 ½ hours; 10:00 am – 1:30 pm. This was done to reduce the probability of leakage of information or any irregularity that may call for prevalence of cheating during the examination exercise.
Also, independent entry measures were applied at exam areas including At the same time, strict entry protocols such as maximum occupancy of examination halls, mandatory wearing of face masks, hand sanitization before entering the examination areas and providing a temperature check were implemented. Originally the candidates were searched before being allowed inside and they were permitted to take into the examination hall the following articles: pen, admit card, ID card, small change, and plastic articles such as credit/debit cards and driving licenses etc. These measures were among others what the government had taken to ensure that the environment that the test takers were subjected to was secure at all times.
The Government response and the expectation for the future
After marking the end of the exam successfully the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) of Assam came to X (formerly twitter) to comment on how peaceful the examination was. This test for a large number of aspirants means that this exam established itself as a model for mass recruitment examination in the state where 11,23,258 candidates took the exam in total.
