But there is one fact most consultants bury: no Malaysian medical university currently offers the compulsory 12-month internship (housemanship) to international students — and under the NMC’s 2021 rules, that single gap can block your medical licence in India.

1. Is MBBS in Malaysia Valid in India? The Internship Rule Nobody Explains
Short answer: for most students admitted after November 2021, no — not for practising in India.
The National Medical Commission’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, notified on 18 November 2021, require three things from any foreign medical degree:
- A course of at least 54 months
- A 12-month internship in the same foreign institution that awarded the degree
- A licence (or eligibility for one) to practise medicine in that country
Here is where Malaysia fails the test. Housemanship — Malaysia’s version of the internship — is run through government hospitals under the Malaysian Medical Council, and placements are effectively reserved for Malaysian citizens. International graduates cannot complete it.
No internship in Malaysia = no FMGE/NExT eligibility = no licence in India. Before 2021, Indian students simply did their internship back home. The NMC closed that door in the same notification.
Some agents still quote “WHO recognised” and “NMC listed” to paper over this. WDOMS listing tells you a college exists; it says nothing about your Indian licence. You can verify any college yourself on the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Malaysia is not a budget destination. Total tuition sits between the cost of an Indian private college and a deemed university — far above Russia or Kazakhstan.

3. What Are the Eligibility Rules — and Is NEET Required for MBBS in Malaysia?
Yes. NEET qualification is mandatory for Indian students, and Malaysian universities set academic bars higher than most MBBS-abroad destinations.

Notice the difference from Central Asia: a 50% PCB student who scraped through NEET will struggle here. Malaysia filters harder at entry — which is partly why its teaching quality holds up.

Honestly, yes — this is the part agents don’t exaggerate. Malaysia has 32 medical schools listed in WDOMS, and the standard of teaching is closer to India’s better private colleges than to the mass-intake universities of Eastern Europe.

- IMU, Taylor’s, UCSI and Monash Malaysia run structured, small-batch clinical training
- RCSI-UCD Malaysia and Newcastle Malaysia award degrees linked to Irish and UK institutions

English is the medium of instruction throughout, the country is among Asia’s safest, and with over 20 lakh people of Indian origin in Malaysia, food and community are the least of your worries.
5. Who Is MBBS in Malaysia Actually For?
Malaysia makes sense as a global-career route, not an India-return route. If your plan after MBBS is:
- UK (PLAB/UKMLA) — Malaysian degrees are well regarded by the GMC pathway, and twinning programs put you inside the UK system directly
- USA (USMLE) — graduates are ECFMG-eligible and IMU-type curricula map well to Step 1 prep
- Australia/New Zealand — geographic and academic proximity helps
- Practising in Malaysia’s private sector or the Middle East
